Description

Greenway Court is a house built in 1786 by B. Richardson, with earlier 16th-century cellars and 18th-century alterations. The main structure is of red brick in a Flemish bond. It has a plain tile roof. The house is two storeys high, with attics and cellars. A low plinth of red brick in English bond is visible at the base. The roof is mansarded to the front, featuring brick corbels and coping to the gable ends, and semi-mansarded to the left and with a catslide to the right when viewed from the rear. Chimneys are positioned towards each end of the rear elevation. There are three flat-roofed dormers. The front elevation has a regular three-window arrangement with tripartite sash windows, some with shallow segmental heads set in open boxes. Later canted bays on the ground floor appear to have re-used tripartite sashes, with the one on the right placed asymmetrically. A central half-glazed door is set within a moulded wooden architrave and features a rectangular fanlight with radiating glazing bars. A later, early 20th-century half-glazed porch, accessed by three steps, has been added. Two-storey additions were constructed in the late 19th century to the rear of the right gable end. Bricks in the left gable end are inscribed “B. Richardson London y 1786.” The house is said to have been the residence of the Culpeper family in the 16th century, although all but the cellars were destroyed by fire.
