Description

This is a pair of cottages, Barton Cottage (No. 56) and Holly Cottage (No. 58), dating from the mid-19th century. They are located on Sandgate Hill, and form a group with numbers 60 to 64. The cottages are two storeys high and have weatherboarded frontages, with hipped tiled roofs. The side elevations are tile-hung. The windows are sashes; those in No. 56 retain their original glazing bars, while those in No. 58 have only vertical bars. Louvred shutters are present on the windows. The ground floor has two three-light bays, with No. 58’s bays canted and No. 56's bays square. Simple doorcases are present, each incorporating a fanlight. No. 56 has a wooden weatherhood supported by brackets.
