Description

The Grand Hotel, built between 1899 and 1903 by Daniel Baker of Folkestone, stands on Metropole Road East, Folkestone. The date 1900 is inscribed on the building. Designed in a style similar to the New Metropole, it is a five-story building with attics, constructed of red brick with stone dressings and a cornice above the ground floor. The facade possesses four asymmetrically placed bays extending from the ground to the third floors, with gables above the end window bays. The building is topped by a Mansard roof, featuring two dormers between each other. A higher central portion incorporates a dome and a simple cupola supported by four columns. A prominent feature is the projecting ground floor conservatory, which has octagonal projections at its ends, capped with ogee domes, and a central projection with a pediment and two bays between. The east front features 22 windows arranged in five similar bays, interspersed with two central pediments. The building possesses group value with the New Metropole. A low wall constructed of stone rubble, with tiled coping and piers topped with tiled caps, surrounds the hotel.
