Description
Church Cottages is a row of houses that was originally a workhouse, built in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with the first floor of the rear wall covered in tiles. It features a plain tile roof and has a double-depth design with two storeys. The eaves cornice is dentilled in brick.
At the center of the front is a two-storey canted brick bay topped with a plain tile roof, and the cornice wraps around it. There are four brick ridge stacks, one at each end and one on each side of the central bay. The front has a regular arrangement of five windows, consisting of 2-light multi-paned casements, with two on each side and one in the center of the bay. Each canted side of the bay has a blocked window. The ground-floor windows have segmental heads.
The door to No. 3 is boarded and has a segmental head, located behind a later brick porch with a round-headed outer opening. There is a similar door and porch for No. 5 at the left gable end. No. 1 features a half-glazed door in a single-storey addition to the right gable end, while Nos. 2 and 4 have rear doors. The interior has not been inspected.
