Description
The Hotel Ambassador Southcliff is a mid-19th century terrace building that stands four storeys high, including attics and a basement. The exterior is finished in stucco and topped with a slate roof featuring eleven pedimented dormers, one of which is a three-light dormer. The building has a moulded dentilled eaves cornice and mainly features sash windows, with a total of eleven vertical-only windows. The Southcliff section of the terrace includes a three-light canted bay window that extends through all floors. There are stringcourses between the floors, and the second-floor windows have curved pediments and moulded architraves. The first floor has a cast iron balcony, and Southcliff retains a tent-shaped canopy and verandah. The left side features a Tuscan portico, while the right side has a double Tuscan portico. The ground floors all have rusticated three-light canted bays; however, the Hotel Ambassador has had its original doorcase removed and replaced with a modern glazed porch. The buildings at Nos 16 to 19 form a group with Nos 22 to 26, with Nos 16 and 17 being of local interest.
