Description
Shepherdswell War Memorial is located at the north-western corner of The Green, serving as a focal point at the top of Church Hill. The Church of St Andrew, which is also listed, is situated to the south-east, along with several other listed buildings nearby around The Green.
The memorial features a granite wheel-head cross designed in the Celtic style. The front face of the cross is adorned with a reversed sword carved in relief, and below it are the dates 1914/1918, carved and painted in black. The cross shaft rises from a square, tapering pedestal. On the front face of the pedestal, the main inscription reads "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF SHEPHERDSWELL WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR" followed by the names of 20 individuals. The granite pedestal is set on a concrete base, which has a tablet affixed to the front displaying the inscription for the Second World War, "1939 – 1945" along with the names of 14 individuals.
