Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church located in St Margarets at Cliffe, with parts dating back to the 12th and 14th centuries. The chancel was restored in 1873. The building is constructed of flint and rubble, arranged in an irregular pattern, and features a plain tiled roof. It comprises a chancel, nave, and a south tower, which serves as a two-storey structure also functioning as a porch. Above the porch is a priest's room with trefoiled single lights. Throughout the church, there are single light windows with slightly pointed arches, some of which have restored exterior jambs. The west window, restored in the 15th century, replaces a previously blocked triple lancet composition, while the east window, in the Early English style, dates from the 19th century and is considered poor in quality.

Inside, there is a blocked north door and a semi-circular recess in the south wall of the nave. All window reveals are original. The nave features a roof supported by four crown posts, and there is a large double chamfered chancel arch resting on round responds, adorned with worn crocketed capitals. The chancel is stepped and has a restored crown post roof. The church fittings include 19th-century elements in the chancel and font, 18th-century box pews, and a clearly distinguished raised and fielded panelled hexagonal pulpit opposite the pulpit. Movable benches are placed in the centre aisle, and a painting of the Royal Arms from the 17th century is displayed on the north wall of the nave.
