Description
The Old Church of St Mary is a redundant church located in Clee St Margaret. It dates back to the 12th century, with alterations made in the 14th century and a restoration in 1876. The building is constructed of coursed stone rubble with ashlar dressing and features a plain-tile roof.
The church has a chancel and nave, with an integral bellcote. The chancel includes a 14th-century east window with twin cusped ogee-arched lights, a restored Early English lancet window on the north side, and a small round-headed lancet from the 12th century on the south side. There is an inscribed tablet in the gable end that reads "W F/ R/ A D/ 1719," indicating that William Fosbrooke became Rector in 1716.
On the north wall of the nave, there are restored Early English windows to the left and a 12th-century north doorway to the right, featuring a chamfered round arch with a plain chamfered hoodmould and abacus, along with chamfered door jambs. The south wall has two restored Early English lancets and another lancet on the west gable, which has an inscribed tablet in the apex that is partially illegible and dated to the 1790s. The bellcote has a single arched opening housing one bell and a coped ashlar gabled roof, dated 1894.
Inside, the chancel features a two-bay restored single-purlin roof with an intermediate arch-braced truss. The nave has a restored single-purlin roof with an intermediate arch-braced truss that includes an upper king-post and twin raking struts. There is also a triple vertical-strut and collar truss abutting the chancel truss, and a plain octagonal font is present.
