Description

House. Dating back to the 16th century, it was refaced in the 17th century and extended and altered around 1904. The house is timber-framed and now clad in red brick, with flint and yellow brick dressings, and has a plain tiled roof. Originally a three-cell hall-house, it sits on a flint plinth, with diapered brick insets. The roof is hipped and features several stacks, paired and offset to the left, projecting at the front left, and to the centre right, rear right and end right, along with three flush skylights to the right. Six glazing bar sash windows are on the first floor, and four glazing bar sashes and a tripartite sash are on the ground floor, all with moulded surrounds set into blocked openings marked by yellow brick dressings. The upper wall on the right side was rebuilt around 1904. A central, half-glazed door is set within a gabled porch and has a terraced semi-circular fanlight. The left return has a large, offset stack in English bond, incorporating a four-centred arched doorway. A large stack to the rear has tumbled-in brickwork, with a truncated and diverted chimney leading to an early 20th-century stack. The interior follows a cross passage plan, with the front and rear doors still opposite each other. An early 20th-century inglenook partition separates the parlour, and there’s a ceiling with moulded cross panelled ceiling joists and a four-centred moulded brick fireplace with a hollow chamfer. The upper floor features a rear corridor and framed partitions to the main rooms, including a moulded and stop-chamfered door from the stair to the corridor and four-centred arched doorways to the rooms. Chalk block lined cellars are also present.
