Description

The South Kent College Ladywell Annexe is a technical college, now an annexe to the main college, built in 1894 by J S Chapple. Chapple had previously worked in the office of William Burges and as clerk of works, and the building closely matches the adjoining Town Hall in its materials and architectural style. The construction is of squared flint with a stone rubble ground floor and ashlar dressings, topped with a slate roof. The building is three storeys high. The front elevation features a large gable to the left and a dormer window to the right. The gable contains a large arched window with a rose window above and four trefoiled lancets below. The dormer window is a triple mullioned and transomed window with a decorative gable on brackets. The first floor has four windows – two triple windows with trefoil heads, and two double windows – leading to an arched connection to the Town Hall. The ground floor has three cambered arched windows with transoms, and a similar arch to the doorcase, which features a double door with floral motif ironwork. A side elevation has, on the second floor, three gables with stone kneelers and very long casements, likely designed to accommodate artwork. The first floor has five windows with Caernarvon arches, and the ground floor has six cambered arched windows. The rear elevation also incorporates several Caernarvon-arched casements.
