Description

The Town Hall, originally built as a town hall and library, dates from 1874 to 1875 and was designed by Alexander and Henman, with the library by Weller and Proud. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a slate roof. The building has two storeys, a basement, and an attic.

The facade features entrance steps leading to three moulded pointed arches that spring from round piers with foliated caps. Above the two outer arches are gabled oriel windows, with gabled attic dormers positioned above them. To the left of the central section, there are three bays, while to the right, there is one bay. The ground floor windows have flat lintels set within Caernarvon arches, while the first floor windows have round heads. A tower projects slightly at the right side, featuring a second-floor window with a stone balcony. Below the pyramid roof of the tower is a continuous arcade with detached shafts, and a truncated chimney rises from the left side of this roof. Timber dormers are present at both the front and rear. The tower is topped with an open timber bellcote and a short slated spire.

To the left of the facade is the former library, which has stone storey and impost bands. On the right side, there is a gabled projection with two pointed windows on the first floor and a moulded pointed window, which was formerly a doorway, below. The left side features three bays, with the leftmost bay projecting slightly. The ground floor windows consist of two pointed lights with central shafts that have foliated capitals.

Inside, the main hall includes galleries on three sides and an apsidal end with raked seating and an organ. The nave roof is supported by iron trusses that are pierced in an openwork pattern. At the gallery level, cast iron columns are present, along with transverse and longitudinal iron arches.
