Description
The Central Public Library is a public library built in 1907 by Stephen J Holliday of West Bromwich. It is constructed of red brick with yellow terra cotta dressings. The main facade features a symmetrical design with two storeys and five bays, highlighted by giant engaged fluted Ionic columns on pedestals. The central bay has an open pediment supported by outer antae and inner free-standing columns. The ground floor windows are round-headed with keystones, and the timber glazing bars include Venetian lower lights topped with a central pediment. The first floor windows consist of three lights separated by brick mullions, except for the central window, which has two round-headed lights under a round arch within the pediment. The doorway is accessed by stone steps and features a round arch with glazing.
Inside, the central hallway has an open-well stair decorated with mosaic and tile work, including the inscription: "This building is the gift of Mr Andrew Carnegie to the Borough." There are murals in the stairwell and lending library, created around 1913-1924, with the latter depicting scenes from The Canterbury Tales. The library underwent some repartitioning during its reorganization in 1937-1938, and some of these partitions and shelving remain.
