Description

The Church of St Michael and the Holy Angels is a Roman Catholic church built between 1875 and 1877 by architects Dunn and Hansom, with a tower and spire added in 1911 by Edmund Kirby. It is constructed of red brick with some stone dressings and has a tiled roof. The church is oriented in a conventional manner, with the chancel located at the south-west end. The layout includes a north-west tower, a nave with a clerestory, a continuous chancel, and north and south aisles, as well as north and south chapels.

The west wall features triple stepped lancets with stone heads and sills, along with a moulded pointed doorway that has angle shafts. The tower is supported by clasping buttresses at the lower stage, with angle buttresses above and corner pinnacles. The stone spire rises above, and the bell openings consist of two trefoiled lights topped with a quatrefoil under a pointed head. The north doorway is also moulded and pointed. The aisles are designed with five bays, alternating between paired lancets and round windows, while the clerestory has single lancets. Each transeptal chapel contains two lancets with a round window above, and there is a rose window at the east end.

Inside, the church features three-bay nave arcades with pointed moulded brick arches that spring from painted round columns with moulded capitals. The roof is supported by scissor-braced rafters, and there is a west organ gallery. The chancel is separated from the nave by an arch-braced truss carried on slim engaged shafts, and the chancel roof is boarded. The east window contains glass dating from the late 19th century.
