Description
The Assembly Hall and offices at Gordon's School were completed in 1887 and designed by William Butterfield in the Gothic Revival style. The building features mainly red brick in Flemish bond, with some black brick decoration and stone dressings. The roof is tiled and has two brick and stone chimneystacks along the ridge.
The Assembly Hall and offices are arranged in a two-bay, single-storey layout, with the principal front facing south towards the playing fields. This front includes two large gables, each featuring a giant five-bay, two-tier Caernarvon-arched window set within pointed stone arches. The tympanums display chequer-work brick and stone decoration, along with a series of stone bands and cross-shaped saddlestones. A projecting porch is situated between the gables, adorned with similar saddle-stone and chequer-work details, and contains a cambered arched doorcase with a four-centred arch that holds a 20th-century double door.
On the north side, which faces the parade ground, there are two similar gables with stone saddle-stones and bands. The first floor features three-light Caernarvon-arched windows, while the ground floor has slightly-projecting two-light Caernarvon-arched windows. The ground floor windows are flanked by single-light Caernarvon-arched windows and doorcases with 20th-century panelled doors. A central single-storey projecting part is a 20th-century addition, as are the single-storey brown brick extensions on either side of the gables. The side elevations also have gables with chequer-work details and some Caernarvon-arched windows, with a further 20th-century addition on the west side.
Inside, the assembly hall consists of two bays divided by a giant arch and features a boarded roof. The north wall displays a central slate and marble tablet commemorating General Gordon, flanked by wooden memorials to two founders, General Higginson and General Sir Dighton Probyn.
