Description
The statue of General Gordon, located at Gordon's School, is a Grade II listed structure. It is a second casting from 1902 of a statue originally sculpted by Edward Onslow Ford in 1890. The stone plinth dates from around 1959.
The statue stands thirteen feet high and is made of bronze, depicting General Gordon in the uniform of an Egyptian general, seated on a tasselled saddle on a standing camel. The front of the base is inscribed with the name 'GORDON' and features a decoration of olive branches. The rectangular stone plinth is designed in a classical style, with recessed corner piers, a moulded cornice, and a base. One side of the plinth bears an inscription that reads, 'THIS STATUE WAS ERECTED AT KHARTOUM/ IN 1904 AND PRESENTED TO/ THE SCHOOL IN 1959.' Additionally, an inscription on the base of the plinth notes that it was presented in memory of Major General Sir Hubert J Huddleston, who served in the Sudan for 23 years.
