Description
The People of Dover war memorial is located in a Garden of Remembrance outside Maison Dieu House on Biggin Street, near the junction with High Street and Effingham Crescent. It features a bronze figure of a life-size young boy representing Youth, who stands with his arms stretched upwards, holding a flaming cross in his right hand, with a ring of thorns at his feet. The figure is mounted on a Cornish grey granite pedestal that displays bronze reliefs on three sides and a principal inscription, along with low flanking walls that list names.
The pedestal features the Arms of the Borough in bronze relief on the front, below which is the main inscription in applied bronze lettering that reads: "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE PEOPLE OF DOVER WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WARS 1914-1919 – 1939-1945." The sides of the pedestal are adorned with bronze wreaths, while the back includes an additional plaque commemorating the First World War, added in 1934, and a smaller plaque for the Second World War, added in 1949.
The low flanking walls display a 4.2-meter long roll of honour listing names from the First World War. The plinth, which is 0.45 meters tall and 4.5 meters long, features sunken integral flower holders. An additional step with an interpretive plaque was added at the back of the memorial. Beneath the bronze relief on the front of the plinth is inscribed: "VILLE ET PORTUS DOVOR."
Additionally, there is a stone dedication in the flower beds that reads: "THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION FUNDS COLLECTED FOR DOVER PRISONERS OF WAR BEING ALSO GIVEN AS A THANK OFFERING BY THOSE WHO RETURNED SAFELY."
