Description
Maison Dieu House, originally the residence of the Agent Victualler, dates back to 1665. It is a two-storey building with attics, constructed of red brick in English bond. The roof features five dormers, which are flanked by brick pilasters topped with pediments that alternate between curved and triangular shapes. These dormers are connected by a parapet. The first floor is adorned with thin brick pilasters that are wider at the top than at the bottom, supporting an entablature with Ionic capitals. There is a string course above the ground floor. The building has five 16th-century sash windows, including two double-hung sashes on the ground floor, with intact glazing bars. The doorcase is framed by brick pilasters and has a round-headed arch. A gable is present at the north end of the building. Inside, there is a good staircase featuring turned balusters. Maison Dieu House is also scheduled as an Ancient Monument and has group value with the Town Hall and Maison Dieu Hall located in High Street.
