Description
A terrace of eight houses dating from the mid-19th century, located on Effingham Crescent in Dover. The houses are constructed of stuccoed exposed flint, with brick dressings at the rear, and have Welsh slate roofs with gabled ends. Rendered axial stacks are positioned over alternate party walls. The terrace forms a crescent with a convex front, and comprises four pairs of houses, each pair slightly advanced or recessed. A fifth pair to the left has been converted into a hotel and is not included in the listing.
The houses are three storeys tall with attics and a basement, and have a front elevation of four bays each, alternating in projection. A moulded stucco eaves cornice runs along the top, and a string course is present at first floor level. The first-floor windows are set within moulded architraves with a continuous cill. All original 12-pane sashes remain in the upper floors, with the exception of No 11, where they have been replaced by casements. The basement windows retain their original 16-pane sashes. The paved doorways have stuccoed pilasters and entablatures surmounted by cornices, with 19th-century panelled doors, some partly glazed, and rectangular overlights. Small, flat-roofed dormers are present, with most of their sashes replaced.
The listing includes stuccoed brick front garden walls and gatepiers with moulded caps, fronting the doorways, which have flights of steps leading up to them, with solid stuccoed balustrades. Some rear windows have been replaced. The interior has not been inspected but is expected to retain original features such as joinery (including staircases), chimneypieces, and plasterwork.
