Description
The Church of St Nicholas is a Grade I listed building located on Church Street in Southfleet. It dates back to the 14th century, with some 15th-century windows, and was restored in 1867. The church is constructed of flint, featuring a west tower with three stages made of flint and ragstone arranged in a chequerwork pattern. The tower includes a higher northeast octagonal stair turret and a crenellated parapet. The structure comprises a chancel, nave, and aisle, all topped with three equally sized gables, along with a south porch.
Inside, the church has a decorated interior that includes a piscina and triple sedilia with ogee arches. The south aisle contains some fragments of sculpture. There is a Perpendicular font and stalls featuring misericords. Some 14th-century tiles can be found near the sedilia, and the pulpit is made up of Jacobean panels. The church also has wall paintings of Latimer and Ridley, which may date to the 18th century. Additionally, there are several brasses located in the chancel and south aisle, along with a large alabaster wall monument dedicated to John Sedley, who died in 1605.
