Description

Chapter Farmhouse, originally known as Nos 1 and 2 Dean and Chapter Cottages, is a 15th-century Wealden hall house that has been recently restored, with the hall space opened up again. The building is timber framed with plaster infill. The first-floor window bays at each end project and are supported by brackets. Exposed curved braces are visible, and the eaves have exposed timber framing with a cove and oversail on curved braces. There are two casement windows and a restored, full-height hall window with diamond-shaped mullions. The roof is tiled and hipped, with smoke louvres. A 16th-century external chimneystack is located on the east elevation. The east-facing entrance has a 16th-century doorcase with spandrels. The interior retains the original service screen, a crown post roof, an embattled beam at the solar end, and a 16th-century stone fireplace in the hall, which features a ceiling with chamfered beams from the same period. It is a good example of a Wealden house.
