Description

Friary Court and Old Friary, formerly known as The Rectory, is a 14th-century house likely built by Thomas de Alkham, who was the rector of Southfleet from 1323. The building has been altered and enlarged in the 19th century. The west and south fronts represent the main medieval part of the structure. It is two storeys high with attics, featuring four windows and three gabled dormers on the west side. Originally, the house was faced with flints, but some areas have been refaced in cement. The roof is hipped and tiled, with the right-hand portion having a gablet that was originally a smoke louvre.

On the first floor, there is one trefoil-headed lancet window, and on the ground floor, there is a window with two wider trefoil-headed lights and a dripstone above. The other windows are from the 18th or 19th century. The west front is also faced with flints, but the south half has a gabled projection that was added in the 16th or 17th century. The north end of the building is a 19th-century addition that includes a bell in the attic storey. Inside, the layout consists of an open hall and cross wings, with the south wing containing the solar. This wing features a hall window at the rear, which has a mullion and transom, with sexfoiled ogees in the square head, and retains the remains of a crown post roof.
