Description
Nos 1 to 8 Mercery Lane is a Grade II* listed building located on the west side of the street. This structure consists of two sections and was originally the Chequers Inn, which served as a hostel for pilgrims and had a dormitory with 100 beds. The building is three stories tall and features painted brick or plastered walls with a total of 13 windows. The shop fronts are modern.
The northeast section, which has six windows, dates from the 18th century and includes three curved bay windows on the first floor. The southwest section, with seven windows, comprises 14th-century timber-framed buildings that have an overhanging second floor. This section has 18th-century sash windows with intact glazing bars and one curved bay window on the first floor of each house.
Nos 1 to 8A, along with Nos 10 to 16 and Nos 38 to 44 Burgate, as well as Nos 1 to 9 Butchery Lane, form a group. Additionally, Nos 1 to 8A also group with Nos 1 and 2 High Street.
