Description

This is a late 14th-century building, altered in the 19th century, originally part of a terrace with numbers 40 to 43. It is a three-story structure built of painted brick, with a hipped roof covered in old tiles. The second floor has two 19th-century sash windows. The first floor has two 19th-century bays, with an overhang. A 19th-century shopfront is present. The side elevation, which runs along Butchery Lane, retains original four-light mullion windows. Numbers 38 to 44 Burgate, along with numbers 1 to 9 (consecutive) Butchery Lane and numbers 1 to 8A (consecutive) and 10 to 16 Mercery Lane, form a group.
