No. 40 Burgate is a late 14th-century building that is part of a group including Nos. 40-44. It has three storeys, with the second floor plastered and the first floor finished in painted brick. The building features one three-light 18th-century sash window with intact glazing bars. There is a mid-19th-century shopfront, while the rear elevation includes two 18th-century sash windows and a narrow plain 18th-century doorcase. This property, along with Nos. 38 to 44 and Nos. 1 to 9 Butchery Lane, as well as Nos. 1 to 8A and Nos. 10 to 16 Mercery Lane, forms a cohesive group.
