Description
Latchmere House, built in 1620 and refronted in the early 19th century, is a three-storey building with a stucco exterior and a rusticated base. It features a parapet and five sash windows set in moulded architraves, complete with stone sills and intact glazing bars. There are two string courses, and the first floor has later balconettes. The round-headed doorcases contain six fielded panelled doors, and there are two footscrapers at the entrance. The right side doorcase also has intact glazing bars.
Inside, the house is timber-framed and shows traces of 17th-century painted floral and scroll decorations, along with the initials Q M W and M W found in a cupboard on the first floor. This floor includes a room with an early 19th-century bow window and a moulded cornice featuring floral decoration. An early 19th-century mantelpiece with dentils, fluted pilasters, and heads of Alexander the Great is set in a marble surround, complemented by a fine early 19th-century cast iron firegrate and panelled doors. The cellar contains some reused Roman bricks and medieval masonry.
Latchmere House is part of a group with Nos 24 to 27.
