Description
The gatehouse at Heronden West Cross is a lodge built around 1846, likely designed by the architect W J Donthorn, and showcases the Perpendicular style. Constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, it features a roof made of fishscale slates. The structure includes a central two-storey carriage entrance with a room above, flanked by one-storey pavilions.
The east elevation displays a gabled central section with coping and a finial, flanked by octagonal turrets that have pseudo-machicolations. The right turret is larger and features lancet windows connected by a hood moulding, which also links to two two-light mullioned windows with leaded lights in the upper room. Above this area is a shield with an angel below, set within a large four-centred arch. The pavilions have gable ends with kneelers; the left pavilion contains a cross window, while the right has a single mullioned and transomed casement. The structure has a plinth and an arched doorcase beneath the carriage arch. The west elevation is similar, though the central carriage entrance lacks turrets and instead has moulded brick octagonal chimney pots, along with an image niche in the gable.
