Description

Martin Lodge is a building that was originally a school and dates from the 17th century and around 1824. The 17th-century wing is timber-framed, covered in English bond brickwork and weatherboarding, and has a slate roof. The 19th-century wing is made of red brick and also features a slate roof.

The entrance front, which is from the 19th century, is two storeys high with a hipped roof and has stacks at the rear on both the left and right sides. The front has a regular arrangement of three sash windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor, all with gauged heads. The central entrance consists of a four-panelled door topped with a rectangular fanlight and a flat hood supported by brackets.

To the right of the main building is a single-storey painted brick range on a rubble plinth, with a plain tile roof and three sash windows. This range was originally part of the school but is now connected to the adjoining commercial premises. According to Kelly's Directory from 1927, the school building dates to around 1824. The rear block features a heavy scantling timber frame, and two mullioned windows have been revealed.
