Description
California Farm is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with a refacing around 1600. It features a timber frame and is clad with a ragstone base and red brick in English bond. The roof is plain tiled and the building has an L-shaped plan. It stands two storeys high on a tall stone plinth, with some areas raised into the ground floor. The hipped roof has a large offset projecting stack to the left, which has tumbled-in brickwork and is roughcast with a moulded cornice. There was a second similar stack at the rear of the recessed side wing, but it has been removed.
The front of the house has one wooden casement window on each floor, along with a boarded door to the right. There is a recessed wing to the right that has a second door. The fenestration is irregular on the return and rear walls, featuring rendered chamfered surrounds on one window on the left return and one on the rear wall, which were originally fitted with brick mullions.
Inside, the house has chamfered cross-beamed ceilings with quirk-stops and three Gothick panelled doors. The interior posts show exposed gunstock-jowls. The roof, which can be accessed by a straight flight of quarter-log stairs, has clasped purlins and wind braces.
