Description
The ice house in the grounds of Hole Park is a structure likely dating from the 18th century. It features a tapering cylindrical shape with a domed roof, and the interior is lined with brick arranged in header bond. The well measures approximately 11 feet in diameter and tapers slightly as it descends, reaching an overall depth of about 16 feet. There is a drain that empties into the valley. The exterior is covered in a cement-based render, which may have been applied in the early 20th century. A brick approach tunnel, which faces north, is 14 feet long and 4 feet wide, although only a few courses of this tunnel remain visible due to undergrowth. The ice for the house was likely sourced from a series of ponds on the estate, with a now-dry pond located no more than 30 yards to the south. This ice house retains its chamber intact and is part of a group of estate buildings.
