Description
The gate houses and gateway to Chilham Castle were built around 1922 and designed by Sir Herbert Baker. They consist of two identical gate houses made of red brick with ashlar dressings and a plain tile roof. Each gate house stands two storeys high on a plinth and features a moulded stone cornice on the ground floor, a plat band on the first floor, and a gable with ball finials, along with ashlar quoins. The first floor has a three-light stone mullion window, while the ground floor has a four-light stone mullion window. The entrance is located on the side front within the gates. Each gate house is flanked by a brick wall that is 10 feet long, leading to a plank door set in a four-centred arched opening, which is attached to a brick gate pier on a weathered stone plinth topped with a large stone urn. The cornice from the house extends over both the wall and the gate pier. The gates themselves are made of heavy solid boarding with spearheaded spikes along the ridge. The walls attached to the left and right of the gate houses are 7 feet high and 7 feet long, featuring coping tiles on the right-hand section and oversailing brick courses on the left-hand section.
