Description

Old Alresford Place is a rectory, now serving as a Diocesan Centre, built around 1740 for Dr. John Headley, the rector. The building is constructed of brick and features an old plain tile roof. It originally consisted of a 5 by 3 bay layout, with a similar block added to the rear around 1817. The entrance was moved to the central bay at the end of the original block, and mid-19th century service wings were added.

The front of the building is 2½ storeys high and has five bays, with a central bay flanked by giant pilasters at each end. The façade is made of blue brick with red brick dressings. The original door has been replaced by a sash window, with stone console brackets on either side supporting a stone slab porch roof. The windows are all 18-pane sashes with louvred stone sills, blind boxes, and lowered rubbed brick arches. A moulded brick string course runs along the first floor, which features five 12-pane sashes with similar detailing. The central window is set in a raised panel with a blind opening below, flanked by pilasters that support an elliptical rubbed brick arch. There is also a moulded string course on the second floor, which has five 9-pane fixed windows with blind boxes and rubbed brick arches. The building is topped with a moulded, toothed brick cornice and a parapet with stone coping.

Inside, the ground floor features a large drawing room from 1817, complete with a contemporary fireplace and plaster decorations on the walls, including a bracketed cornice and an Ionic screen that divides off a third of the room. The staircase hall is plainer but has a domed glass cupola, while other rooms contain 18th-century fittings.
