Description
Upton House is a medium-sized country house built around 1764, with later enlargements in the late 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of brick, stuccoed with Portland stone dressings, and features a slate roof. The main structure is a 5 by 3 bay mid-18th century house that stands three storeys tall with a basement. Two additional similar bays were added to the right, and to the left, a two-storey wing with six narrow bays was added in the 19th century.
The entrance front has a centrally located door in the original building, featuring early 19th century double doors that are half-glazed. This is set beneath a wide stone Doric porch, which is accessed by a short flight of steps flanked by stone balustrades. On either side of the door are two 12-pane sash windows with stone cills. Above, there are five smaller 12-pane sashes, a second-floor stone cornice with five similar sashes, and a parapet with a raised top and stone coping. The house has gable stacks and an additional stack added to the front of the left bay. The two added bays are similar to the original but have 14-pane windows on the ground floor and chamfered stone quoins on the right corner. The left bays feature similar ground and first-floor windows, a cornice, a plain parapet above, and a brick plinth.
Inside, there is a large 18th-century entrance hall with a scagliola column arcade, along with moulded doors, panels, and chimneypieces. While there are some other 18th-century features, most of the interior details are from the 19th century. The rear of the property has terraced lawns that lead to a ha-ha and a park beyond.
