Description
No 27 on Broad Street is an 18th-century house made of stucco with a tile roof. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring four windows above three, which are irregularly spaced. The building has plain walling, wide moulded eaves supported by widely spaced brackets, and a plinth. The windows are Victorian sashes set in exposed frames, and there are two flat-roofed dormers with sashes. The entrance has a doorcase with a moulded hood on a panelled architrave, angle blocks, and a rectangular fanlight with a carved diamond pattern within a straight surround, leading to a six-panelled door. There is also a plain doorway to a rear passage on the south side, which has a wrought-iron gate. A wall plaque notes that Mary Russell Mitford was born here in 1787 and died in 1855.
