Description
The building known as the Museum, set back between Nos 18 and 20 on Pound Hill in New Alresford, is said to have originally been constructed as a cloth hall and later extended as a chapel. It dates from the 18th century and was modified in 1825. The structure is made of brick and features a slate roof.
The two-storey elevations reveal that the front was added at a later date. The side walls are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with the lower windows now filled in. The slate roof is hipped at the north end and extends to the south, forming a gable over the former hip.
The symmetrical front, facing south, has two storeys and three windows. It features a pediment gable that encloses a small arched-headed opening with a stone panel inscribed "Alresford Chapel 1825." The walling is in Flemish bond with blue headers, and it includes brick dentil eaves, red rubbed flat arches, and stone sills. The windows are sashes set in reveals.
The wide doorcase is in a plain Doric style, featuring a deep frieze and enclosing a four-pane rectangular fanlight, along with double doors that each have six panels. Inside, there are two cast-iron columns that support the gallery in the older part of the building.
