Description
The Peninsula Barracks Gymnasium is a barracks gymnasium built between 1899 and 1904 by E. Ingress Bell. It is constructed of Flemish bond red brick with Portland stone dressings and features a slate roof with stone coping at the gable ends. The building has a long rectangular plan and is a single storey structure with two tiers of windows. The west front is symmetrical with a layout of 1:5:1:5:1 bays, where the end bays are blind. The central bay contains a rusticated stone doorway topped with a pediment and a semi-circular fanlight, flanked by rusticated stone corner pilasters. The lower windows have a continuous stone cill band and feature 2-light horizontally sliding sashes with glazing bars. The upper windows also have glazing bars and stone cills. The rear (east) elevation is similar in design. The interior has not been inspected.
