Description
The gymnasium at Repton School, built in 1907 by Forsyth & Maule with Colonel Robert Edis, is a single-storey structure over a basement, constructed of red brick and topped with a plain tile half-hipped roof featuring a brick gable stack. The south elevation is enhanced by four buttresses with two set-offs and dentils below. The entrance on the ground floor includes a round-arched doorway with double doors and a Diocletian window above, flanked by cross windows with segmental relieving arches. Above this, there are two similar windows alongside a larger mullioned and transomed window. The north elevation mirrors the south with four buttresses, while the basement features a segmental arched doorway to the right, two single-light windows, and a two-light window. The ground floor has three tall transomed windows, with the center window being a two-light design, and a circular louvred ventilator above. Both the west and east elevations consist of nine bays divided by buttresses with two set-offs. The ground floor features two-light windows with segmental relieving arches, while the first floor has cross windows with flat heads, differing slightly in the last two bays to the south on each elevation. Four hipped roof dormers are present on the east and west sides. At the southeast corner, a low wall connects to four rusticated brick gate piers with moulded stone caps, complemented by wrought iron gates and railings. The roof structure of the gymnasium is supported by arched steel girder trusses.
