Description
The lychgate and churchyard wall at St Wystan's Church are of medieval origin, with elements from the 19th century and around 1905. Constructed from random and coursed sandstone and ashlar, the lychgate features a timber structure topped with a plain tile roof. Built as a memorial to Reverend A Formon, the lychgate has a chamfered stone plinth and a timber superstructure. Its sides are divided into two bays, with a plain balustrade between the main uprights. The gabled roof is covered with plain tiles and has open timber gables, which include moulded bressumers and carved bargeboards on the south side. A pair of timber gates curves down to the center.
The attached ashlar walls slope down to square piers that feature gothic panels and pyramid caps. The random coursed wall, which has chamfered copings, encloses the south and west sides of the churchyard. Along the west side, there are four memorial tablets from the late 18th century and early 19th century dedicated to members of the Stevens family. The wall on the southeast side may be medieval and includes four buttresses to the west. Additionally, there is a wall on the north side of the church that encloses a separate rectangular area, made from coursed rubblestone with a stringcourse to the west and chamfered copings.
