Description
The Great Hall at Winchester Castle, built between 1252 and 1240 under Henry III, is a Grade I listed building and a significant historical remnant. The entrance was altered in the 19th century, with a new porch added to the center of one side. The exterior features flint with stone dressings and a tall two-light window adorned with early plate tracery. The interior boasts a remarkable double arcade and a double cube space measuring 55 feet. It includes a five-bay arcade supported by tall Purbeck shafts. The roof was renewed in 1873 by T H Wyatt. Notable features inside include a bronze statue of Queen Victoria created by Alfred Gilbert in 1897 and the Medieval Round Table displayed on the west wall. The Great Hall is part of a group of listed buildings along Castle Avenue, which includes the Castle Hill Offices.
