Description
Serle's House, located on Southgate Street, was built around 1740 and is a notable red brick building with three storeys. The central section of the house projects forward and features a large canted bay, with segmental sides and one window on each face of the bay. This central bay is adorned with Doric pilasters and a dentilled segmental pediment, which sits below a ramped parapet topped with a vase. The flanking wings have two windows each, with segmental heads and keystones, while the second-floor windows have flat heads and keystones. The building has sash windows with glazing bars. A modern doorway was added in 1952, and there is an entablature and cornice above. The hipped slate roof is complemented by a vase on the parapet, and the rainwater heads feature the cypher of George III. Inside, there is a well-preserved contemporary staircase.
