Description
Knockers Wine Bar and M S Bell is a restaurant and part ground-floor office located on the north-west side of The Square in Wickham. The building dates back to the 16th century and features a timber frame with 19th-century cladding. The front wall is jettied, with the upper section roughcast and the lower section rendered. It includes some exposed posts and curved brackets. The other walls are constructed of brick in Flemish bond with blue headers, and the north gable is tile-hung. The roof is tiled, half-hipped on the north side, and has a catslide at the rear. The south-east front has two storeys and an attic, with three windows above two ground-floor splayed bays and two plain doorways. Inside, the timber frame is exposed, and an upper room contains 16th-century wall paintings featuring floral and geometric patterns. However, paintings on the underside of the same room are concealed by fireproof plasterboard.
