Description

Deadman's Plack Monument is a commemorative monument dedicated to Earl Athelwold, who was killed at this site by King Edgar in 963. The monument features a tall stone cross set on a two-stage pedestal with plain, unmoulded details. An inscription on the north side indicates that the cross was erected in 1825 by Lieutenant Colonel William Iremonger. On the south side, there is an inscription in Gothic lettering that recounts the story of the event.
