Description

The barn at Picket Twenty Farm is an 18th-century threshing barn that has undergone some later alterations. It is timber-framed and features a corrugated tin roof, with some parts of the frame replaced. The north wall has collapsed and has been partially rebuilt using concrete blocks. One side and one end are covered with weatherboarding, while the remaining end is clad in tin sheet. The plinth and frame have been removed in two bays to create access to a modern lean-to extension, which is not considered of special interest. The hipped roof is also covered in tin sheet, and there is a double cart entrance. An adjoining cart shed is a later addition and is not of special interest.

Inside, the barn has five bays and a single aisle to the north. The wall frame features cut jowled principal posts, and in two bays, there are paired diagonal braces instead of the more traditional wind braces. The oak roof is constructed with an angled queen post truss structure and has trenched purlins, with many original split lathe battens rafters still intact between the common rafters.

This barn is significant for its 18th-century construction and the extent of its original timber framing, designed specifically for threshing. It includes a double cart entrance, five bays for hay storage, and a large central area for threshing. Its historical importance is enhanced by its date and the degree of its surviving frame, as well as its group value with the nearby granary.
