Description

The Iron Bridge, built in 1840, is a footbridge that carries the Ladies Walk above the old main road into the town, traversing a deep cutting in the chalk. It features three cast iron cambered beams, each made of two parts bolted together at the center, with the upper and lower edges connected by concentric circles. The footway is flanked by iron rails on each side, designed with a pattern of 17 between seven thicker uprights, which are topped with a knob and have a curved abutment piece. The beams end on plates that rest against brickwork abutments, with one panel displaying raised lettering that reads "Tasker and Fowler 1851". This bridge is a notable example of the work of a local firm.
