Description

Abbey Farm Cottages is a house that has been converted into cottages, dating from the late 15th century with a 16th-century wing. It has undergone encasing in the 18th and 19th centuries. The structure features a timber frame that is encased in brick, with parts that are tile hung and rendered. The older section facing the road was originally a two-bay hall with a service bay and a solar above, but it is now two stories high and consists of three bays. The 16th-century wing at the rear of the hall bays is also two stories and three bays wide.

The front facing the road is made of 18th-century brick and includes three 16-pane sash windows, with the central window replacing a door. There is a raised brick band at the first floor level, above which are two 20th-century two-light casements that have replaced the original sashes. The building features end stacks, likely inserted in the 16th century. The left end of the 15th-century range has tile hanging on the first floor, while the 16th-century wing is rendered. The windows include 16-pane sashes, segmental head casements, and 20th-century casements and doors. The ridge of the roof is higher, with an outshot on the other side and a half-hipped end.

Internally, much of the 15th-century frame remains intact. The central open hall truss has an arch-braced collar and false hammerbeams, along with remnants of windows and a cross-passage. The 16th-century stack features stone fireplaces on each floor.
