Description
The loggia, located 500 meters northeast of Awbridge Danes House, was built in 1822 by W Garbett as a boathouse and was later rebuilt as a loggia in 1925, retaining only the front. It is constructed of dressed Portland stone and brick. The structure features a stone bridge with three rusticated arches supported by piers, with flanking walls that extend back to rusticated end piers. Behind these walls, steps lead up to the loggia, which is supported by four Greek Doric columns. The rear wall, along with short side walls at either end, is made of painted brick. A heavy entablature crowns the flat roof, which is likely made of concrete. The rear walls display stone tablets that commemorate the history of Awbridge Danes. This loggia is situated in a very picturesque location, overlooking the lake. A drawing of the original 1822 boathouse, signed by Garbett, can be found in the RIBA Drawings Collection.
