Description

Winton House is a middle-sized country house built in 1838 by O B Carter, with later extensions from the 19th century. The house is constructed of brick with stone dressings and flint decoration, topped with an old plain tile roof. The front features four gabled bays and is two and a half stories high, with a depth of three bays. To the right, there is a set-back bay and a similar three-bay addition. On the left side, there is a gabled porch with a large carved square-headed stone doorway and octagonal brick finials with stone tops. The left center bay has two 2-light casements, while the other bays have 3-light casements. A yellow brick band runs along the first floor, which features 3-light casements in all bays except the left bay, which has a carved stone panel. There are also 2-light casements in the gable. The windows have leaded lights, and between the gables, there are leaded downpipes with crested hopper heads. The exterior displays a diaper pattern of flush knapped flint, and the end gables are kneelered with diagonal end buttresses. Between the gables, there are chimneys with triple moulded octagonal stacks topped with stone heads. The added bays are two stories high with simpler details, featuring a gabled projecting bay on the right and dentilled eaves on the other bays.
