Description
Black Swan House, originally a range of houses now combined into one dwelling, dates from the 18th century. It is constructed of flint and brick, mostly rendered on cob, and features a tiled and thatched roof. The front of the house, which is set back and steps downhill, has a gabled projection on the south side. The building is three storeys high and has a window arrangement of one, one, and two. The south cross-wing is thatched, with a half-hipped gable at both the front and rear, while the other part of the roof is tiled and stepped. The walls are rendered, partly on cob and partly on brick and flint, with some cambered openings. The windows are casements. There is a large boarded door and another door, which was previously a workshop, with an adjoining window that serves cellar areas. Entrances are located on the south elevation (with two doorways) and at the rear, which features a flat-roofed late 20th-century extension. The south wing has a rear wall of flint panelling with brick dressings and a framed upper gable. Notably, on the front wall above the north side door, where a window is missing, there is a swan cut from sheet metal and painted black, said to have been attached by a previous owner, as there is no history of the building being a public house.
