Description

The School House, located at No. 56, is a building that was originally three cottages, dating from the late 18th century and mid 19th century. It is constructed of brick and timber frame, topped with a thatched roof. The building has a plain cottage appearance, with a larger L-shaped extension at the north end, designed in the Tudor Cottage-Orne style.

The front (east) elevation features two storeys, with three windows on the upper floor and two on the ground floor. The roof is half-hipped at the south end, revealing the exposed frame in the upper gable, while the north end has a gable. The south side wall displays red brickwork in Flemish bond, with a cambered opening on the ground floor. The central and north sides have exposed framing with bold diagonal studding, and the return face (north) also features diagonal studs with herringbone brickwork infill, all resting on a brick plinth.

On the ground floor, there are casement windows at the front, with three upper lights that are splayed oriels supported by carved brackets and featuring diagonal leaded lights. The north elevation includes an oriel window in the upper part of the gable, with a triangular bay below it, sheltered by a deep thatched hood. This bay has mullions and transoms with cast-iron diagonal lights. To the west side, there is a rectangular bay with similar details, including a framed gable and thatched hood, which merges with the low eaves of the rear wing.

The doorway is topped with a gabled hood on carved brackets, leading to a door with three panels above three panels; this design is repeated in the central entrance on the north elevation. The Tudor style is also evident on the gabled west face of the rear wing, where it meets the school.
