Description
Marshcourt Pre-Preparatory Department and North Lodge, located 250 meters north of Marsh Court in Kings Somborne, is a former garage and power house built in 1905 by Edward Lutyens, with later extensions. The building is constructed from brick, ashlar stone, and flint, featuring a tile offset and weatherboarded upper section, with tile buttresses and an old plain tile roof.
The structure consists of an L-shaped block that is one and a half stories high, with a seven-bay section along the road and a five-bay single-storey range at the house end, which is situated on a higher level. At the house end, a retaining wall projects forward to narrow the road. The front of the building has a tall stone plinth, a tile offset, and a weatherboarded upper section, except for one bay that is made of brick.
On one side, all but the end bay features a cross-window, which was formerly leaded. The opposite side has a similar arrangement, except for the bay next to the brick bay, which includes a timber archway and a planked door inside. The roof on this side has a hipped dormer with a two-light casement above the door, and a similar dormer with latticed blind openings is located high on the roof in the center. Both roofs are hipped at the house end, featuring a large square stack with half-lozenge sections on either side and moulded heads over the second bay from that end.
The wings of the building are weatherboarded on brick plinths and include a tall hip-roofed central midstray porch. The road-facing bays have two-light casements, while the far bays project out, either with similar casements and two hipped dormers above, or an open verandah. The roof is hipped and sweeps down, with a large ridge stack above the side with dormers, which is a double version of the other stacks.
