Description
Barn and cottage, originally a 15th-century timber-framed building, largely encased in the 18th century. It ceased to be used as a dwelling in the 1930s. The building is timber-framed with wattle and daub infill internally, and brick encasing, later rendered. It has a corrugated iron roof, replacing a former thatched covering. The plan consists of three bays, with a half-bay extension added to one end, originally making it a single-storey structure in the 16th century. The front of the building features a plank door positioned to the right of the central bay. Each bay contains an 18th-century three-light leaded casement window with wrought iron opening lights. A brick extension is situated at the right-hand end. The roof has a half-hipped section on the left and a swept-down section on the right. A ridge stack is located above the door. Inside, the structure retains three full cruck trusses with tie beams, collars, yokes, ridge beams, and side purlins, along with curved windbraces and original rafters. Originally, it was a three-bay open hall. A floor was inserted into the central bay in the late 16th century, featuring chamfered stops on the beam and joists, along with a chimney also dating from that period. The left bay has an 18th-century floor. The northern bay remains at full height, with a ceiling at collar level. The building is about to be carefully restored as a dwelling.
